Writing Exercise – Person, Place, Event

This is a great exercise when you’re trying to come up with new ideas, especially for short stories or flash fiction.

So let’s get started, get a piece of paper and pen and draw two lines down the middle to form three columns. In the first column, list every type of person you can think of, for  example, mother, fireman, grandparents, prince or whatever comes to mind. In the second column, think of a variety of places. It can be anywhere from the corner store to Amsterdam. In the last column, list a time period or historical event like sinking of the Titanic or the year 1776. Now combine a person, place and event and experiment with writing about that particular situation.

Have fun with your combinations and try it as many times as you like.
